J. Michael Benfield, MD

In order to provide quality medical care with dedication to access, service and the development of meaningful relationships, Dr. Michael Benfield knew that the current healthcare system would need to be improved. As a minister’s son and the oldest of four children, commitment to the service of others, quality relationship building and leadership have been the foundations of Dr. Benfield’s life.

Through the process of discussions with patients, physicians and participation in various leadership programs, Dr. Benfield developed MD2U. This practice model is devoted to leading the medical profession back to one of service, instilled with kindness, compassion and understanding, thus minimizing the frustrations typically encountered by the chronically ill patients who include the frail elderly and disabled. MD2U is dedicated to keeping these patients living at home with reduced ER visits and hospitalizations. This is not only a great benefit to the patients and their families but to the healthcare systems as a whole.

Dr. Benfield attended and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on full academic scholarship and completed medical school at East Carolina University School of Medicine. He accepted a position at the University of Louisville in the Internal Medicine & Pediatrics combined residency program.  Once of his final residency evaluations described him as very professional, gave excellent patient care and has a great sense of humor. For Dr. Benfield, this was the highest compliment he had received because, to him, this is the essence of the profession of being a physician.
